BUT: We are the only one of which we know. That is a difference. We can tell that we exist on this planet. Where are the others, how do they look like, how can we find them? Believing is not the same as knowing.

Vor allem, da die Personalisierung bzw. die ‘Amerikanisierung’ deutscher Wahlkämpfe immer mehr a Bedeutung gewonnen haben. Empirische Untersuchungen, ob der Spitzenkandidat einer Partei die Wahlentscheidung wirklich in so starkem Ausmaß beeinflusst wie es scheint, gibt es allerdings noch nicht sehr viele. Aufgrund der Personalisierungsthese und ihrer großen Bedeutung für die Politik und die Wahlkampfführung möchte ich in dieser Hausarbeit untersuchen, welche Faktoren die Wähler in ihrer Entscheidung bei den Bundestagswahlen 1998 wirklich beeinflusst haben. Des Weiteren auch, ob die Professionalisierung der SPD-Wahlkampagne, nach amerikanischem Vorbild, mit der Herausstellung des Kanzlerkandidaten als wichtigstem Punkt, den Wahlsieg der SPD entscheidend mitbestimmt hat. Außerdem beschäftige ich mich damit, ob die Personalisierung der Wahlkämpfe ein neues Phänomen im Zuge des Medienzeitalters und der zunehmenden ‘Amerikanisierung’ der Wahlkämpfe ist, oder schon länger existiert und nur mehr beachtet und untersucht wird.
